महामृत्युंजय मंत्र

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a prayer from the Rigveda (7.59.12). It honours Shiva, the three-eyed One, and asks to be freed from the fear of death the way a ripe fruit falls easily from its vine.

Many families chant it daily, and in times of illness or worry, to steady the mind.

verse 1

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam | urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā'mṛtāt ||

We worship the three-eyed One, fragrant, who nourishes all that lives. As a ripe cucumber is freed from its vine, may He free us from death, and not from immortality.
